I wouldn't unplug the battery while running. This car is super sensitive to current and voltage so that could fry something. Either with your tool or the obc check to see the voltage while running. Should be above 13.5, preferably 13.8+ if I recall. If not, check your voltage regulator before replacing the alternator.
